Port Madison Enterprises:
Empowering the Suquamish Tribe
A Legacy of Prosperity
The Suquamish people have thrived along the shores of the Kitsap Peninsula for centuries, their name echoing the clear salt waters that have long sustained them. Our ancestors flourished in this abundant land, skillfully harvesting salmon, clams, and other natural treasures. Today, Suquamish culture remains vibrant—a rich tapestry of art, dance, music, and cherished rituals.
Our History and Growth
In 1987, the Suquamish Tribe established Port Madison Enterprises (PME) as the business arm of the Tribal government. PME was created to develop community resources and enhance the Tribe’s economic and social well-being through diverse commercial ventures and strategic investments in public programs, regional infrastructure, and community initiatives that generate independent revenue streams while cultivating community.
From humble beginnings as a single retail store, PME has grown into a thriving enterprise. Today PME oversees multiple diverse ventures including:
- Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort®
- Kiana Lodge®
- White Horse Golf Club®
- Retail stores & gas stations, including Clearwater Markets™ (opened in Bremerton and Poulsbo in 2024)
- Property management division
PME also maintains several wholly owned subsidiaries:
- Port Madison Enterprises Construction Corporation (PMECC)
- Port Madison Construction Corporation (PMCC)
- Suquamish Evergreen Corporation (SEC)
As PME continues to expand its retail portfolio, additional Clearwater Market locations are slated for development, further solidifying the Tribe’s economic presence in the region.
Our Mission
PME endeavors to provide a sustainable, diversified economy that fosters financial independence, drives development, and generates revenue growth for the Suquamish Tribe.
Explore the core tenets of our organization’s efforts below:
- Sustainability – Foster long-term economic growth and stability through environmentally responsible practices and resource management that increase employment, training, and other opportunities that will benefit future generations.
- Financial Independence – Empower the Tribe to achieve self-sufficiency through strategic investments and diverse economic initiatives that develop Suquamish community resources and generate independent revenue streams.
- Community Development – Invest in not-for-profit projects, community organizations, and other worthy programs that enhance the social, cultural, and economic well-being of the Suquamish Tribe and its neighbors.
Governance
PME is led by a seven-member Board of Directors appointed by the Suquamish Tribal Council. The Board plays a pivotal role in guiding PME’s strategic direction, ensuring alignment with the Tribe’s values and overseeing the company’s growth. As stewards of the Tribe’s resources, Board members are responsible for establishing policies governing the employment, supervision, compensation, disciplining, and discharge of the personnel of PME; advising the Suquamish Tribal Council on issues of economic development; and making other key decisions that balance the Tribe’s economic development with its cultural preservation and social responsibilities.
Under the Board of Directors’ leadership, PME has grown to employ nearly 1,000 individuals, making it the second-largest private employer in the greater Kitsap area. This not only provides vital job opportunities for the Tribe but also strengthens the local economy and fosters sustainable development for future generations. Both PME’s growth and diversification stand as testaments to the Tribe’s enduring legacy, entrepreneurial spirit, and commitment to community empowerment.
